Often times we read labels that are ‘free’ of certain toxins without really understanding what we are freeing ourselves from. We could simply tell you OLAPLEX is non-toxic and free of Sulfates (SLS & SLES), Parabens, Phthalates, Phosphates, along with the other hard-to-pronounce toxins. That’s not true to our mission though. Our mission is to inform and keep your health front and center. Your understanding of what and why we’re free of toxins is integrative to our mission. So often we visit the beauty isle or browse online reading these ingredients without an understanding of why it’s important to avoid them. Grab your burn book, class is in session.
Parabens. Parabens are a preservative used to extend the shelf life of many beauty products. These preservatives come in many forms such as, butylparaben, methylparaben, and propylparaben. They may prevent the growth of bacteria and mold in products, but that doesn’t mean they’re meant to be used on our bodies. Parabens are believed to act as estrogen in the body, which can trigger cells leading to the growth of tumors and cancer. Naturally, whatever we wash off our face, hair, and bodies goes down our drains and into our oceans. Meaning many parabens are affecting the environment and marine life as well as our health.
Sulfates (SLS & SLES). These are used for cleansing and foaming in bathroom products. Being clean sounds like something you want, right? Not in the form of Sulfates. Sulfates have the opposite effect when they’re processed in your body, leaving a residue in the heart, brain, and lungs. Sulfates have also been found to break down proteins in the body, which can lead to serious damage on cell membranes. You can identify these by sodium laureate sulfate, ammonium laureate sulfate, and sodium lauryl sulfate.
Phthalates. This chemical is nearly everywhere from cosmetics to household cleaners. Phthalates are used to give products like plastic flexibility and as a binding agent. There are dozens of phthalates out there, all with degenerative effects on the body. To name a few, phthalates have been linked to developmental issues, autism, male fertility issues, type 2 diabetes, athsma, and low IQ. That’s not all, phthalates are also linked to negative effects on reproductive development. This class of chemicals go by several monikers, here’s how you can identify them: diethyl phthalate (DEP), dibutyl phthalate (DnBP), di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP),butyl benzyl phthalate (BBzP), di-butyl phthalate (DBP), benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP), diisobutyl phthalate (DiBP), di-n-octyl phthalate (DnOP), diisononyl phthalate (DiNP), di-n-octyl phthalate (DnOP), dipentyl phthalate (DPP), di-isobutyl phthalate (DiBP), di-isohexyl phthalate, dicyclohexyl phthalate (DcHP), di-isoheptyl phthalate, and di-isononyl phthalate (DiNP).
Phosphates.Phosphates are synthetic chemicals often found in the form of salts that are used as buffering agents, cleaning agents, fragrance agents, and food additives.Found side effects include heart disease and neurotoxicity.
Formaldehyde and formaldehyde releasing agents.The International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies formaldehyde as a human carcinogen. They’re used as a preservatives to kill microorganisms and their growth in products. Formaledhyde sneaks into your products under various names, such as Formalin (the liquid form of formaldehyde). The formaldehyde releasing agents are DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, diazolidinyl urea, quaternium 15, bronopol, 5-bromo-5-nitro-1,3 dioxane, and hydroxymethylglycinate. Cancer? No thank you.
Other toxins include:Mineral oil, Retinyl Palmitate, Hydroquinone, Triclosan, Triclocarban, synthetic fragrances, and more.
